Bill to Create Fresh South East State Passes First Reading in House of Reps

A bill seeking to create a new state, Etiti State, from the existing five Southeast states has been introduced on the floor of the House of Representatives and passed for first reading.

This comes weeks after the introduction of another bill seeking to create Orlu State from Abia, Imo, and Anambra States.

The recent bill, sponsored by a group of lawmakers from the region was introduced on Tuesday during plenary.

It seeks to delete the word “36” and replace it with “37” in the constitution, effectively creating a new state. It also seeks to insert the word “Etiti” after Enugu in the list of states and transfer 11 local government areas from their current states to the new state.

The local governments affected are Isuikwuato and Umu-Nneochi from Abia, Orumba North and Orumba South from Anambra, Ivo and Ohaozara from Ebonyi, Aninri, Agwu, and Oji River from Enugu, and Okigwe and Onuimo from Imo.
