Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the refineries at Kaduna, Warri, and Port Harcourt will be functional, the Downstream Committee of the Nigerian Senate has announced.
Senator Jide Ipinsagba, the Vice Chairman of the Committee, made the disclosure during an on-the-spot assessment of the refineries.
He said the country’s three government-owned refineries will become fully operational before January 2025.
He revealed that the refineries are undergoing significant upgrades, with the Port Harcourt refinery already achieving 90-95% optimization, Warri at 80%, and Kaduna at 70%.
Furthermore, the Dangote refinery in Lagos State is set to begin refining Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, soon. The committee is optimistic that the refined petroleum products will meet internal consumption demands and be exported thereafter.
“We have conducted thorough oversight of all the refineries, and we are pleased with the progress made,” Senator Ipinsagba stated. “Efforts are in top gear to ensure all refineries are functioning at full capacity by the end of this year. With the completion of these projects, internal fuel consumption will no longer be a concern, and we will have the opportunity to export our refined oil.”
