Ongoing Membership Drive Only for New Members

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has cleared the air on its ongoing membership drive, stating that it is solely for new members and not aimed at removing existing ones.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the party made this clarification in a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba.

The party said it received reports that some existing members in certain states were being asked to revalidate their membership, sparking rumours of a political witch-hunt.

However, the PDP has assured that the drive is only meant to provide an opportunity for eligible Nigerians to join the party.

The statement said, “The NWC in clear terms clarifies that the ongoing membership drive and registration of new members is only targeted at providing opportunity and access to eligible Nigerians who are enthusiastic and surging in their millions to register as members of our Party across the country.

“The NWC further clarifies that the membership status, rights and privileges of already existing members remain valid and in no way whatsoever affected by the membership drive.

“Consequently, no existing member is expected or required to have his or her membership revalidated as such individuals remain bona-fide members of the Party and not subject to any form of revalidation.

“All members and officers of our Party especially at all Electoral Wards across the country should take note of the above and be guided accordingly.

“The NWC again acknowledges the continuing influx of millions of Nigerians into our Party in the ongoing PDP membership drive exercise across the country.

“The PDP urges all members to continue to work together in the drive to further strengthen our Party for the task ahead.”

This clarification puts to rest rumours of a political expulsion, particularly aimed at former Rivers governor Nyesom Wike and his allies, allegedly by loyalists of Governor Sim Fubara.

It should be recalled that Wike and Fubara are at odds allegedly over the control of political structures in the state.
