Two Time AFCON Winner Likens Midfielder to Messi

  • Ghana legend Reverend Osei Kofi has praised the talent of Black Stars midfielder Mohammed Kudus
  • The two-time AFCON winner likened the West Ham star’s ability to greats like Messi and Abedi Pele
  • Kudus enjoyed a stellar campaign in his first season in the English Premier League with the Hammers

West Ham United star, Mohammed Kudus continues to receive adulation from some of the greats in Ghanaian football following his outstanding campaign in the Premier League.

The Ghana international excelled in his first season in England, ending the campaign as the player with the most successful dribbles in Europe’s top seven leagues and was also one of the best players at West Ham.

His performances caught the attention of two-time Africa Cup of Nations winner, Reverend Osei Kofi, who describes the 23-year-old’s talent as generational.

According to the former AFCON Golden Boot winner, Kudus is the type of player who could make a difference at any time in a game, comparing him to Lionel Messi, Abedi Pele and Mohammed Polo.

“Some players are naturally talented,” he told Joy Sports, as quoted by My Joy Online.

“Like [Lionel] Messi, when a team flops, he takes over to make things work. I was given that role by CK Gyamfi. Whenever the team flopped, I had to carry the team. We are about three of us who did that—myself, Polo, and Abedi,” he added.

“After me, there was Polo who came. But now, we have someone like [Mohammed] Kudus. Players like that are generational talents.”

Kofi is an icon of Ghanaian football starring for the Black Stars at the 1963 and 1965 Africa Cup of Nations as the West African nation emerged victorious in both tournaments.

Although Ghana has not won the competition in over 40 years, Kofi believes Kudus could be the difference maker for the Black Stars.

Kudus scored eight goals and delivered six assists in the Premier League last season, per Transfermarkt.
