Orlando Cepeda, nicknamed “Baby Bull,” was a legendary Puerto Rican first baseman who smashed his way into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Born in 1937, he debuted in 1958 and became the National League’s Rookie of the Year. Knee issues hampered him throughout his career, but his power never faded.
Cepeda starred for the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1960s, twice leading the National League in RBIs and once in home runs. He was a beloved figure in San Francisco, where his number 30 is retired.
A highlight of his career was winning the 1967 World Series and National League MVP award with the Cardinals.
While injuries limited him to playing for six teams, his talent shone through. He pioneered the use of the designated hitter role, extending his career and solidifying his Hall of Fame credentials.
Cepeda passed away peacefully in 2024 at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy as a slugger, fan favorite, and one of the early Puerto Rican stars to shine in Major League Baseball.
