The return of Copa America brings together some of the highest-earning footballers globally, with Argentina and Brazil boasting some of the wealthiest players.

Defending champions, Argentina kicked off the competition being hosted in the United States with a thrilling 2-0 victory over Canada, with eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi playing a key role.

According to Channels, Julian Alvarez put Argentina ahead in the 49th minute before Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez settled the contest in the 88th minute to give La Albiceleste their first win.

Brazil, one of the top contenders for this year’s Copa America title, has one of the star-studded squads with superstars like Vinicius Junior, Ederson, and Marquinhos looking to dethrone Argentina.

Argentina begins Copa America title defence

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Argentina began their Copa America title defence with a 2-0 win against CONCACAF country, Canada, on Friday, June 21, at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

La Albiceleste won the title by beating hosts, Brazil, 1-0 at the Maracana Stadium, thanks to Angel Di Maria’s first-half goal that won Messi his first international trophy.

The South American champions have also become world champions, winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and also won the UEFA CONMEBOL Finalissima since then.
