Though the 39-year-old forward didn’t score in Portugal’s opening match against the Czech Republic, he played a crucial role in their dramatic comeback victory.

An own goal by Robin Hranac and a last-minute winner from FC Porto’s Francisco Conceicao ensured the 2016 European Champions started the tournament with a win despite falling behind Lukas Provod’s early second-half strike.

The Al-Nassr star had three shots on target, completed all 22 of his passes, and created a major scoring opportunity, earning an overall rating of 7.1 from Sofascore.

Fabregas lauds ‘improved’ Ronaldo

While debates persist regarding the 39-year-old’s role in Roberto Martinez’s squad, Fabregas, currently a BBC pundit during Euro 2024, asserts that Ronaldo’s gameplay has evolved and improved over the years.

“His overall play has been much, much better than we have seen over the last couple of years,” he said, as quoted by Tribuna.

Cesc, a two-time Euros champion, lauded Ronaldo’s sharp instincts and emphasised that the former Real Madrid ace is in high spirits as he competes in a record-setting sixth European Championship.

“At the end of the day, whatever you do, if the team plays well or the team does not play well, he always finds a chance. Either to create something for himself or for the team. At this moment, I think he is feeling so much confidence.”

Czechia boss gives Ronaldo high praise

In a related publication, Sports Brief reported that Czechia boss, Ivan Hasek, offered high praise for Ronaldo despite his team’s heartbreaking defeat to Portugal in their Group F opener on Tuesday, June 18.

Although Hasek expressed frustration over his team letting a potential draw slip away, the 60-year-old coach lauded Ronaldo, calling him one of the greatest footballers in history.
