Hoodlums clash with security operatives, destroy properties in Jos [VIDEO]

Bukuru, in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, was thrown into chaos on Monday as hoodlums rampaged through the area, destroying numerous cars and setting buildings on fire following a minor skirmish with security operatives at Kugiya market.

The unrest began around 2 pm when operatives from the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB), accompanied by security personnel, arrived in the area to enforce an Executive Order signed by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang.

The order aims to control illegal building constructions and manage traffic within the state.

According to eyewitnesses, the enforcement team faced fierce resistance from irate youths armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons.

The situation quickly escalated into violence, leading to the destruction of properties, including over ten cars and several shops owned by innocent citizens.

An eyewitness, Ibrahim Pam, confirmed that the violence broke out during the enforcement of the Executive Order by JMDB and security agencies, which included the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The Youth leader of Bukuru Community, Bello Muhammad, also confirmed the incident.

Muhammed said, “Some traders were going about their normal businesses when suddenly armed security personnel deployed by JMBD descended on them.

“They shot three of our younger brothers, and killed one, while two others got injured.”

Governor Caleb Mutfwang signed Executive Order No. 003, 2024, to address the rampant illegal erection of buildings and traffic issues within the Greater Jos Master Plan.

The order was also a response to the frequent building collapses in the state, emphasizing the need for strict control and regulation of construction activities.

The Plateau Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer DSP Alfred Alabo, stated that the state police commissioner had made immediate deployments to the troubled area, and normalcy had been restored.
